Electric vehicles have the best average reliability rating (96.1%) in a recent survey by What Car? and MotorEasy, however not all cars with this technology are dependable. Many of the components subject to failure are extremely expensive to fix as they cannot be repaired, they must be replaced.

There are a few options when it comes to charging your electric car:

  • You can install a home charging point - a compact weatherproof unit that mounts to a wall with a connected charging cable or a socket for plugging in a portable charging cable.
  • You can also use a regular three-pin plug, although this should only be used as a back-up, as charging times can be extremely slow and they are not designed to withstand heavy loads.
  • There's a growing network of EV chargers being installed around the country. Many of these operate on a pay as you go service, allowing you to top up while on the go.

One of the benefits of an electric car is the low running costs compared to traditional fuel cars. On average electricity costs around 14p per kilowatt-hour, so home charging is a huge benefit to an electric car owner. However, public charging points tend to be more expensive, charging up to 65p per kilowatt-hour.

You need to maintain your car according to manufacturer specifications. This includes keeping it fully serviced, as well as ensuring your car road fund license (aka tax) and MOT are up to date.

MotorEasy believes that the most important component of an electric car should be covered – the electric drive battery. Many of our competitors exclude this from their warranty cover leaving you exposed to failure and severe battery degradation.

An electric car needs servicing at the same intervals as any car. Tyre wear and tear, windscreen wiper replacement, along with brake fluid changes will all still be needed.

Like any car, an MOT will be needed after three years, however this will exclude an emissions test.

    The battery in an EV is subject to degradation over time and this will vary from vehicle to vehicle.
  • Sensors
    In electric vehicles most features are digital, which means when they wear out or become damaged they can be costly to replace and require specialist knowledge.
  • Wear and tear
    EVs are still subject to wear and tear and although there are less parts to contend with, there are vital components that can begin to diminish over time. The motor and batteries are designed to manage high temperatures, however these can still become overheated and cause breakdowns.
